Military Armaments Business Initiative
120,000 signatures against the arms business in Switzerland
On June 21, 2018, the military armaments business initiative will be submitted to the Swiss Federal Chancellery. The Alliance for the Prohibition of War Transactions has managed to collect over 120,000 signatures. The Alliance consists of 40 civil society organisations including PeaceWomen Across the Globe.
Switzerland not only produces and exports war material, but also finances its production abroad. Every year, Swiss banks and pension funds invest tens of millions in armament corporations that produce internationally outlawed weapons such as nuclear weapons or cluster bombs. And this takes place even though the financing of these weapons has been prohibited in Switzerland since July 2012.
Weapons are not products like any other. They are manufactured to kill people- as many people as possible as efficiently as possible. By selling arms, the armament industry makes profits while these weapons will cost human lives in war zones. Switzerland, as the largest and most important financial centre in the world, plays a decisive role.
The military armaments business initiative had already experienced real success during the signature collection phase. Thanks to the pressure of the initiative, several municipal pension funds, such as those of the city of Lucerne and the city of Basel, opted out of armament industry securities. Thanks to the 120,000 signatures collected, the population will soon be able to vote on the military arms investments of the Swiss National Bank or certain pension funds. The Alliance for the Prohibition of War Transactions is delivering the collected signatures on June 21, 2018 to the Federal Chancellery.
The initiative contributes to a more peaceful world, which is why PeaceWomen Across the Globe is supporting the campaign.
